Historically Black sororities receive orders to push for increased voter registration

Delta Sigma Theta spokeswoman Nikela Pradier said that all Divine 9 sororities and fraternities are non-partisan.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A recent press release from the Council of Presidents for the National Pan-Hellenic Council announced an upcoming push for a "massive, coordinated voter mobilization campaign" to ensure strong voter turnout in communities served by the historically Black 'Divine 9' sororities and fraternities.

A local chapter of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. told 3NEWS what the directive means for them. Nikela Pradier said that it is her chapter's intention to follow that national directive-- but emphasized that the organization does not tell people who to vote for.

"Our organization is nonpartisan-- I want to stress that we do not endorse candidates-- but we are encouraged by the energy being created by political processes as far as what we've seen with voter registration."

The move for increased voter mobilization comes after President Joe Biden's announcement that he will not seek reelection in the November 2024 election. Biden recently endorsed his vice president, Kamala Harris to run in his place.

The council of presidents did say that they intend to "meet this critical moment in history with an unprecedented voter registration, education and mobilization coordinated campaign." The push will activate thousands of chapters and members in the nonpartisan effort.

When asked her thoughts on the significance of a Black woman potentially receiving the Democratic Party's nomination, Pradier noted that 'firsts' are still being made for minorities in 2024, and said she is excited by the country's continued progress.

"We look forward to more of those firsts; history being made."
