CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) — The Corpus Christi Police Department Bomb Squad was called to home on Prinston Drive Sunday night after receiving reports of an explosion at the residence.
It happened just before 11 p.m., right behind the Kiii-TV studios.
When police and firefighters arrived at the home they discovered a fire had started because of the explosion.
Police said a 37-year-old man was making fireworks in his living room when the explosion occurred, injuring both his hands. The man has not been identified.
Meanwhile, police are warning others not to mess with fireworks that way.
"Not to mess with the black powder, anything like that," CCPD Lt. Steven Gonzalez said. "Don't take fireworks apart to try to make a bigger explosion or bigger firework. All that is stuff you should avoid."
The man was transported to Christus Spohn Shoreline Hospital for treatment.
Meanwhile, CCPD's bomb squad is looking into the type of materials the man used for his fireworks. They said he had been making them for personal use for years.
