Keep an eye on your outdoor pets as temperatures drop

Old blankets and towels should be given to pets to use in a weatherproof shelter.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — As temperatures drop, city of Corpus Christi Animal Care Services officials want to remind residents to be sure and take appropriate action when it comes to caring for outdoor pets.

If your pet must remain outside, it is is essential to provide them with a covered and weatherproof shelter.

The shelter should be elevated from the ground, with the entrance facing away from the wind, and pet owners should also provide blankets or towels to keep their pets warm.

Also, animal care services officials advise checking cars before starting them, because cats and small animals will sometimes shelter near or under vehicles.

They also don't recommend leaving pets inside vehicles during cold weather, because a car can act as a refrigerator in the winter, holding in the cold.

Remember, if it's too cold for you to be outside, then it is too cold for your pets.

Animal care services officers will be responding to calls regarding animals left out in the cold, and residents suspecting abuse can call the city’s customer call center at 311, or file a report using the 311 app.
