Ingleside temporary animal shelter damaged by strong winds

The shelter is an outside kennel with a tarp for a roof, which was set up last fall while a new shelter is being built.

INGLESIDE, Texas — As early morning storms rolled through the area Wednesday, Ingleside's temporary animal shelter took a hit.

The shelter was set up last fall while a new shelter is built. It's an outside kennel with a tarp for a roof.

Ingleside Interim Police Chief Martin Molina said no dogs were harmed during the storm, but the tarp that was in place to protect them was ripped to pieces by the wind.

"It was just the torn-up tarp that was flapping on the wind, so we changed that out," Molina said.

The animal shelter is currently home to 18 dogs. Thanks to the Ingleside Police, they were moved to safety and their temporary shelter was repaired.

"They were relocated to adjacent empty kennels until we did the repairs and then they were placed back into the kennels," Molina said. "There was no damage to any of the dog houses."

The Ingleside Animal Shelter took to social media to praise the Ingleside Police officers for their actions. Molina said he appreciates all the support they have received from the community.

"To see that, it makes a big difference, we know that we're not alone in this,"  Molina said.

As we look ahead to a potentially busy Hurricane season, Wednesday's storm serves as a reminder to pet owners to make sure their pets' shelters are protected from the elements.

"Your pets are very similar to how you feel when you're outside, so bringing them inside, keeping them safe during that time is really important if you care and love about your pet," Jackie McCollough, the Director of Marketing and Development at the Gulf Coast Humane Society said.

McCollough also urges pet owners to micro-chip their pets and make sure those documents stay up to date.

Ingleside City Manager Brenton Lewis said the new animal shelter continues to be on track to be completed by September of this year.
