CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Last weekend marked the biggest Billy Sandifer Big Shell Beach Cleanup ever, and it was also the first one held after his passing last year.
For a solid hour, they came a steady line of trucks and jeeps. The front lines in the battle against litter at Big Shell making their way through the fog twenty to forty miles down Padre Island National Seashore. They pick up the trash left on the beach by Gulf tides and careless humans.
The Billy Sandier Big Shell Cleanup found right driving conditions for the 21 miles down the beach. Not a lot of trash on the beach but much wood left over from high tide.
However, as they moved south, the wood was outpaced by the plastic. Bottles, and what may have been a shoe belonging to Bigfoot, it was plastic too.
There were some unusual finds, like a refrigerator. Volunteers came in from all over just for the day.
In all, half a dozen large dumpsters full of beach garbage picked up in the biggest Big Shell Cleanup ever.
Billy may be gone, but his legacy is alive and well on Big Shell Beach.
