Island Report: Marker 37 receives an upgrade

The area has been home to two Island institutions Doc's and Snoopy's Pier for years, but additional development has been slow in coming until now.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — When you look at the area on the Padre Island side of the JFK Causeway, it seems like an area that is need of some help, and in fact, help is on the way.

Currently, the standing water is suitable for a bird bath and not much else.

The area has been home to two Island institutions Doc's and Snoopy's Pier for years, but additional development has been slow in coming until now.

City bond money is bringing a million and a half dollars in improvements that will include more parking and sidewalks. In anticipation of what is to come the new owner of Marker 37 has already begun work on a five-year plan that will turn it into an entertainment complex.

A new pier is in place along with fuel pumps, several bars, much fancy woodwork, and plenty of space for people and boats. Also, there is still more to come.

The first big event in the new place is at 6 p.m. Friday when the first in a series of free concerts by the Island Moon hits the stage with the reggae band the Chanklas.
