CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Texas A&M-Corpus Christi students had the opportunity to demonstrate their culinary skills during a live cooking showdown known as the Islander Top Chef Competition.
In the second annual event, two student teams, led by university chefs, were challenged to create a dish called an "Island Bowl," using locally sourced ingredients.
Students showcased their cooking styles while competing against the clock with Food Network star Jet Tila in attendance as emcee.
"Tonight is really about student engagement," she said. "The students watch me on Food Network, now they get to watch me emcee, and this is the second year. We brought some Food Network chefs out here last year. So Number One is having fun tonight, and Number Two is to learn something."
Tila said the Food Network and the university are aiming to continue holding the event annually.
