CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The City of Kingsville is exploring the downtown TIRZ to implement further upgrades in the historic area.
The city had attempted to establish a TIRZ back in 2016, but it never materialized. The city intended to establish a tax increment reinvestment zone for the historic downtown.
"Our planning director, now our new planning director, will explore reinvigorating the TIRZ idea but we need to come up with a very good project, what's the cost of that so what's the value of a TIRZ and how are we going to implement it?" said Kingsville City Manager Mark McLaughlin.
Freddy Hernandez owns the Lone Star Barbershop situated at the corner of East Kleberg Avenue and 8th Street. It is a popular destination for a quality haircut in historic downtown Kingsville.
"We would like to see the buildings that are vacated. We would like to see them painted. We need awnings here we need the streets fixed, of course and hopefully things are looking up, but any improvement would be good here in downtown," he said.
McLaughlin said it may take up to two years to finalize the details regarding the TIRZ. However, in the interim, he assures that the city will persist in making numerous enhancements in the downtown area. In recent years, the city has installed wider sidewalks, curbs, and implemented other upgrades to this historic landmark.
