Kingsville launches $53M wastewater, flood prevention project to combat flooding in the area

The first of these projects is the replacement of the city's main wastewater line.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Kingsville officials are celebrating the kickoff of $53 million worth of wastewater and flood prevention projects.

This is because the city needs to repair the main wastewater line and also needs to continue to work on keeping its flood-prone streets from filling up with water in the future.

Back on May 21, 2021, approximately 12 inches of rain fell in seven hours in Kingsville. City Manager Mark McLaughlin said that if the water could have been collected and saved, it would have provided water for the city of Kingsville for three years.

Instead, it flooded streets, just as it does every time heavy rain hits in the area.

"What we are hoping is that as we open up larger pipes under 14 with more cuts, inlets that we can try and prevent the flooding from even happening on 14th but if it does it should clear even faster," he said.

The first of these projects is the replacement of the city's main wastewater line.

"Very beneficial to the city of Kingsville very beneficial, because this is the trunk line that feeds into the wastewater treatment plant. So, if there's a back up in this line as a back up in the rest of the city," he said.

The city is not only excited about the new wastewater line but also about the fact that the Texas Water Development Board is covering 57 percent of the remaining $8 million. The other 43 percent comes from a loan at zero percent interest for 30 years. McLaughlin said the project won't stop flooding, but it will certainly expedite the water's flow out of town and into Baffin Bay much faster than ever.
