Last day to file for intent to run for mayor and city council seats

Here is a look at who is running this election cycle and how to add your name to the ledger.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas —

Today, Aug. 19 marks the last day for November candidate hopefuls to file their intent to run for office.

As of Monday morning there are six mayoral candidates on the ballot for the city to elect for the 2024-2026 term during November's general election.

The race for mayor includes incumbent, mayor Paulette Guajardo. She's looking to serve her third term as mayor.

In the city, mayors are limited to four consecutive two-year terms.

Before becoming mayor for the city of Corpus Christi in 2020, Guajardo had previously served on city council for two terms.

She'll be running against current councilman at-large, Michael Hunter, and small business owner Joshua Fraedrick. Other candidates include business owner John Calkusic, plumber Anthem Powers and Del Mar College professor Dr. Isabel Araiza.

This year there are eight candidates running for at-large positions and 14 candidates looking to fill district seats.

There are some familiar faces on the ballot. Current at-large councilman Jim Klein and District 3's, Roland Barrera are running for at-large positions.

Barrera running for an at-large position leaves his current District 3 position up for grabs. Eric Cantu and Alberto Carrillo III will be running against each other to fill that spot.

District 4 has four fresh faces running to fill Dan Suckley's position, as he will not be running for reelection. Those candidates are May Nardone Mendoza, Kaylynn Paxson, Eric Magnusson, IV and Dan Grimsbo.

Everett Roy, Sylvia Campos and Gil Hernandez are all running for reelection for Districts 1, 2 and 5, respectively.

Today marks the last day to file for intention to run for office. Candidate applications along with the $100 application fee or petition with signatures for both mayor and city council positions must be taken to the city secretary's office by the end of the day to be considered for November's general election.
