CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Every summer, Corpus Christi's public libraries create a space where kids of all ages can come and explore all that their Summer Reading Program has to offer.
From June to the end of July, kids can participate in dance parties, music sessions, and book clubs.
While those activities are entertaining for kids, Managing Librarian for Anita and W.T. Neyland Public Library, Michelle Balis said that she hopes coming to the library and being surrounded by peers encourages kids to stay reading in a time where many fall off the reading routine they have during the school year.
"And we want to prevent that. We want to keep them reading, keep them active, keep them involved, so we've got various programs going on," Balis said.
Youth services librarian at Dr. Clotilde P. Garcia Public Library, Shelby Gonzalez said that the feedback the library receives for the work is what keeps them wanting to continue to give back.
"It warms my heart honestly to be able to create a space for the community to that is free," Gonzalez said.
Gonzalez said those free events are what make the summer so special for those who are looking to keep their kids active in the community while also having fun.
"I absolutely love being able to see the children be able to interact because a lot of the time there are stay at home mothers, or kids that are with their grandmas and they need a break from being at home. Then they come here cool off and get to socialize with other kids," she said.
