Catering for a Cause: Local company has served 600,000 disaster relief meals since Harvey

Diamond Point Catering is loading up and headed to North Carolina, and possibly Florida, to prepare meals for lineman and service workers post severe storms.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — While thousands are still experiencing the aftermath of Hurricane Helene there is another threat headed their way, Hurricane Milton.

As many try to lend a hand where they can, Diamond Point Catering here in the Coastal Bend is loading up to head to North Carolina to help feed the need.

Diamond Point Catering and CC Turkey Events owner, Volkan Koç told 3NEWS it's not their first time participating in disaster relief efforts.

"Most recently, we were in Houston for a little over two weeks and we opened three different sites in Houston," Koç said.  "So, currently here to date, we started our hurricane disaster relief divisions back in 2015. Since Harvey, we have served over 600,000 meals during disasters."

He said he deployed two 18-wheelers full of supplies and equipment that will set up sites in North Carolina.

"Each site is designed to service 1,000 people, so we'll have a couple thousand people of service out there in North Carolina," Koç said. "This afternoon we're taking the staff that's going to be working also on those job sites, so that's what in motion."

He explained this all started when his company created their hurricane disaster plan in 2015, now, they are ready to load up and head out within an hours' notice.

They set up in impacted areas across the U.S. to feed the men and women working around the clock to bring back power to communities in desperate need.

"Whether it's breakfast box lunches, meals or hot meals that we're providing," Koç said. "It's usually very brutal work that we do, It's about 18 hours a day, that 18-to-20-hours-a-day work that we nonstop do and that usually lasts, you know, as long as the recovery efforts are lasting."

Diamond Point Catering officials say they are able to provide these services to these companies with the help of federal disaster funding, and the most important ingredient: their employees.

"Its a scratch my back, I'll scratch yours thing," One of those employees getting ready to board the bus told 3NEWS. "We are humans and we need to have each other's back."

The catering company is currently in the decision-making process of whether or not to send their teams to Florida post Hurricane Milton.
