CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A family is displaced after a fire broke out in their home on Logan Avenue, near Del Mar College's main campus, around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday. There were five family members inside at the time.
According to Assistant Chief Billy Belyeu, while only half of the home was damaged by the flames, the entire home was affected by the smoke. He said fire crews were able to control the fire in 19 minutes.
One elderly female was sent to a local hospital due to smoke inhalation.
Family members told 3NEWS two of their dogs were not able to escape the home.
Responding Battalion Chief Michael Schmidt said firefighters attempted to rescue the dogs, however were unable to locate them in the heavy smoke.
He said the home was a major loss and that The Red Cross was contacted to help the family.
One of the owners of the house, Ross Michael, said his family has lived in the home since 2005 and is devastated by the loss.
"You work all day and you come home to something like this, it's just unbelievable, you don't know how to take it," he said. "It's pretty devastating."
While the cause of the fire remains under investigation, it is believed to have started from a window air-conditioning unit.
