CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Robstown police said they have captured the man they believe is responsible for three armed robberies over the weekend.
Police shared surveillance video with 3NEWS of 41-year-old Jose Rubio paying $3 for a Coke early Sunday morning inside the Roadrunner Travel Center. Once the clerk opened the register, Rubio pulled out a gun and aimed it at the clerk. Rubio then took the money and ran off through the back door.
"I think it's awful for one we've have never been robbed by gunpoint ever here," said Road Runner Travel Center General Manager Pamela Banda.
Robstown Police Chief Rex Ramon said that, through investigation, his team found that a BB gun had been used at the robbery. He said that regardless of the type of gun used, the uncertainty of the situation remained the same.
"No one knows or can tell the difference between a real gun and a BB gun. I don't think anyone's going to stop and ask that question. So, I'm pretty sure the workers are pretty stunned," he said.
Investigators said that Rubio ran and hid in a ditch in front of the convenience store where he was eventually found and charged with one count of armed robbery and possession of a controlled substance.
Banda said she appreciates the timely response from law enforcement.
"They did their job and were able to take care of him that I appreciate," she said.
Police believe Rubio may have been responsible for at least two other armed robberies. On Friday night, the Stripes store at State Highway 44 and Bosquez Street was robbed. Then on Saturday, a man and a woman arrived at a convenience store on Lincoln Avenue at Kansas Street.
The front door glass was busted out after a clerk had just locked the door. Approximately $800 to $900 were taken at gunpoint. Investigators are working to look through surveillance videos and photos to see if they can tie Rubio to those crimes. He now sits in the Nueces County jail on a total of $50,000.
