HOUSTON — A Houston icon is preparing to go under the knife next week and he's asking for positive thoughts as the day approaches.
Jim "Mattress Mack" McInvgale posted a video to social media on Wednesday announcing that he's going to have open-heart surgery on Dec. 10. McInvgale is the owner of Gallery Furniture.
"Thank you for all your prayers and support as I go through this. 🙏 I'll update when I can," the caption read.
In the video, McInvale also announced he was treated for cellulitis in his leg a few months ago but the issue had since been taken care of.
McIngvale said the surgery next week would take about four hours. He said he'll spend about a week in the hospital recovering and then an additional two to three weeks at home recovering.
Other health scares
In late August, McInvale had another health scare that landed him in the hospital.
On Aug. 31, he ended up in the hospital due to cognitive issues.
"I drove to work and for the first time in 43 years, I missed the exit," he said in the update. "That should've told me something was wrong."
He went on to say that when he got to work, he couldn't remember what day it was. That's when a mobile stroke unit came to check him out and take him to St. Luke's.
"I'm down here at St. Luke's Hospital in the emergency room having a little trouble with some cognitive things but I'm sure I'll be alright because they have great doctors a the Texas Medical Center and I will be fine," he said in a message at the time.
McIngvale previously had a stint in the hospital with a stroke scare in June 2019. At the time, he said it was something he's had to deal with throughout his life.
