A new military peer support group has just started here in the Coastal Bend. The group is geared to help veteran women.
Anayeli Ruiz met with organizers and has the story in this edition of our Military Matters report.
It's a group of veterans who support other veteran women.
Karen Fox with the Texas Veterans Commission said, "I have women who are veterans and as we started seeing more and more women coming in for assistance we started seeing more issues for women veterans."
The Women Veterans Group of the Coastal Bend has been in the making for the last year. Finally the group has come together to lend a hand to those women who have served in the military.
Dawn Burton who is an outreach specialist said, "because we lived it, we know that there are other people living it out their too. Maybe we can be source of support and information."
Just by promoting this group on social media and within the community they have seen a huge response.
At the first meeting, over 52 woman signed up to be a part of this group.
One of them even a WWII veteran seeking help.
" it's really nice to be around other women who have similar experiences similar lifestyles based on military services."
The Women Veteran Group of the Coastal Bend has also created an online private Facebook group hoping to reach out to many other women who might not be able to make it to the meetings.
