CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Corpus Christi's city council has authorized $137,260 in funding to support improvements to Whataburger Field this week.
The funding, approved on Tuesday, will address important upgrades that will bring the minor league baseball stadium into compliance with Player Development League standards, ensuring longevity in the community.
Updates will include protective netting extensions, repairs to pedestrian concourse concrete, steel support repairs and other maintenance items to make sure the field remains a premier destination for pro baseball and community events.
The city said that since the MLB assumed oversight of Minor League Baseball in 2021, the new facility standards have enhanced safety, operations and helped ensure the league's longevity.
The Hooks organization has reportedly invested more than $2.6 million in renovations maintain the city-owned facility since 2020.
Other expected upgrades for the 2025 season include replacement of the playing field surface, almost 2,000 stadium bowl seats, HVAC units, and the completion of other essential projects to maintain the facility.
