58th National Drawing & Small Sculpture show brings unique art opportunities to Coastal Bend

The show was originally founded by former Marine and artist Joseph Cain. It spotlights new and diverse artworks each year.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — National Drawing & Small Sculpture show brings renowned artists' works from across the country to the Coastal Bend for a show that can only be seen right here in Corpus Christi. The nearly 60-year-old show annually garners hundreds of submissions from artists who hope to be featured, but the show is ultimately curated by a singular nationally recognized artist juror.

Nearly 800 pieces were submitted for the Del Mar College show this year, which will take place Friday, Feb. 16 at the DMC Cain Gallery. Only 53 pieces were selected.

This year’s juror is Mark H. Cowardin, an accomplished sculptor from Lawrence, Kansas. Cawardin is set to give a presentation on his life and art career.

This year, the show will feature four local artists, including Kevin Gonzalez, a multidisciplinary queer artist who says he did not start making art until he began his college career.

Gonzalez's piece is called "Love Birds," and was made on upcycled material. Gonzalea said he is inspired by different artists, music, printmakers and everyday life. He encourages everyone who has a creative itch to pursue that passion.

"Never stop creating, you can always go back to your passions or visit your hobbies."
