National Night Out returns Oct. 3

Here's what you need to know about the National Night Out block celebration and how it fosters community-police relationships.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — National Night Out is set to return on Oct. 3, and CCPD Crime Prevention Specialist Melissa M. Castro appeared on First Edition to talk about how the event bridges the gap between communities and law enforcement.

She says NNO first began in the early 1980's as a way to bring communities together with police and encourage neighbors to get to know one another. Castro also wants residents to know they play an important role in keeping neighborhoods safe.

"Anything that you know is out of the ordinary in your neighborhood- you've got to call it in. That's the only way we're going to know," said Castro.

The CCPD specialist said the night doesn't have to be an all-out bash--- for some it can simply be a small gathering that will eventually have a larger impact.

"It doesn't have to be a big block party, it can be just the neighbors bringing their chairs out-- maybe there's a neighbor down the street that just moved in, you don't know them...this is the perfect opportunity to get to know your neighbors and in turn you are the eyes and ears of your neighborhood."

If you are interested in forming a neighborhood watch group in your area, NNO is the time to get more information. The department will have a registration form available on the city website where you can specially request Officer Blue, the Chief of Police, bike units and other PD units for your neighborhood celebration.
