CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — If you've flown out of the Corpus Christi International Airport lately, then you've noticed some of the big improvements they've made.
The airport which serves just over 700,000 travelers a year will be opening its newest upgrade, a $1.5-million bar and patio.
CCIA Director of Aviation Kevin Smith said the new features are all part of the airport's master plan to attract more travelers and airlines to the area.
The bar and patio is the result of the airport's partnership with Nueces Brewing, and will officially open to the public Thursday.
Tuesday, 3NEWS got a first look as crews put on the finishing touches. You could call it Corpus Christi International Airport's latest destination.
"We're looking forward to getting this thing up and running," Smith said.
The bar 'landed' right here between Gates 1 and 3.
"If they know they got to wait 20 minutes for their bags, they may stop and kill 20 minutes on the outdoor patio, and have a beer," he said.
Patrons will also be able to step outside onto The Flight Deck, a 1,200 sq. ft. patio area offering panoramic views of the airfield. That's rare for an airport.
"The great news is the patio is 90 percent funded by the FAA, the bar is completely funded by our concessionary, Tailwinds," he said.
It also includes a pet-relief station complete with fire hydrant.
The new addition, no doubt, caught the attention of travelers such as Denise Latten, who is flying back to Ohio.
"I was hoping that bar was open today for a drink," she said. "Hopefully, our next trip, it'll be open for us and we'll enjoy ourselves."
Another traveler, Judy Haven, also took notice of the upgrades.
"I was here in July, and there was nothing, and now there is a whole beautiful bar and renovations going," she said. "Wonderful."
Smith said the project has been in the works for a little more than a year and it was an effort recognized during Tuesday's Corpus Christi City Council meeting.
"It's expected to generate revenue through increased beverage-and-food purchases, further benefiting the airport," said City Manager Peter Zanoni.
Meantime, the airport will begin work on future additions such as an Island Joe's Coffee, Amazon walk-out store, and Salty Oak BBQ.
"All-in-all, we're going to spend a little over $4 million just in new restaurants, bars, and coffee shops, VIP lounge," Smith said.
