New class of ER Medicine residents at CHRISTUS Spohn

These residents are getting hands-on lessons and experience to learn what it takes to practice emergency medicine.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A new class of emergency room residents are now walking the halls of CHRISTUS Spohn Shoreline. The 12 residents are getting hands-on experience learning what it takes to practice emergency medicine as part of CHRISTUS Spohn's Emergency Medicine Residency Program

"The program here at Corpus is incredible," medical resident Dr. Zach Tavallaee said. "We get taught by amazing faculty, the culture here is top notch, we're like a family we all got each others backs and it's really a blessing to be able to learn from such talented people and to be supported by them."

That same program was in danger of closing last year until an agreement between the Nueces County Hospital District and CHRISTUS Spohn was reached. After six weeks of negotiation, the hospital district's board of managers voted last December to invest up to slightly more than $21 million into the program.

"It's about helping people, giving them a chance with anything that they come here in need of," Dr. Austin Zimmerman, with the EMR program, said.

The new deal agreed amends the original five-year offer between Spohn and the hospital district to a six-year deal. For the next 36 months, residents will be learning the ins and outs of emergency medicine and resuscitating critically ill patients at the bedside.
