CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Harbor Bridge Project has made significant progress in the last months and many can now see the bridge from Portland and across Corpus Christi.
Harbor Bridge Project Public Information Manager Lynn Allison said the new bridge is scheduled to be complete by next Spring in 2025.
"I think it’s really interesting that viewers are seeing this project come together," Allison said. "You can see the towers and stay cables from a couple of miles away."
Allison added the North Tower upper lifts are complete while the South Tower lifts are almost finished.
"We are on lift 18; to get up to a lift 20 we should be complete there by the end of May," she said.
Part of April's goal is to finish installing the eighth set of permanent stay cables on the north pylon and six sets of permanent stay cables on the south pylon while advancing over the water.
"We continue to advance over the ship channel and on the back span on both the north and south pylons," Allison said.
Allison said crews are working well together, and that's making it easier for them to reach their deadline next Spring.
"Everything is becoming more and more of a rhythm and a routine to where we're recycling much more frequently to achieve most of this bridge construction by next year," she said.
As the project progresses, there will be major traffic changes starting next weekend involving closures of northbound lanes of State Highway 286 and southbound lanes on Interstate Highway 37.
"We are going to do a realignment of northbound State Highway 286 and we're going to open a new connector ramp," Allison said. "Connecting those northbound commuters on State Highway 286 — or Crosstown Express if you will — they will be able to connect eastbound IH 37 to downtown."
She said the project and TxDOT are finalizing the new ramp connections that will be reopening next weekend.
