Nueces County Commissioner voices disapproval during Pride Week proclamation

Commissioner Carolyn Vaughn and some supporters disagreed with the proclamation.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Nueces County Judge Barbara Canales read a proclamation during Wednesday's Commissioners Court meeting to recognize Pride Week, but not all of the commissioners were on board.

Commissioner Carolyn Vaughn and some supporters disagreed with the proclamation.

"I want it in the record that I do not support this proclamation or agree with the statements in it," Vaughn said.

In spite of that statement, Canales read the proclamation recognizing Texas' fourth annual Pride Week. Supporters were on hand for the proclamation, but there were several people in the audience who agreed with Vaughn to not support it.

"What she said was just right. She didn't say it in so many words, but right is right and wrong is wrong, according to God's word," Joyce Peardon said.

There were also some who were on hand to accept the proclamation.

"People always have their own views," said Bill Hoelscher, president of the Mosaic Project of South Texas. "Bigotry is something that, it's hard to fight. I would suggest that people are uncomfortable with our community or feel we don't belong get educated. Talk to us."

Among other things, the proclamation said Pride Week is dedicated to honoring the lives lost in the Pulse nightclub shooting, commemorating the anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court's marriage equality ruling, and honoring the LGBTQUIA+ community.
