Nueces County looks to increase dune protection permit fee after 14 years

Nueces County leaders say that the increase in the permit fee helps preserve the dunes, especially when it comes to construction and expansion near our beaches.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Due to our location and potential for high storms, our sand dunes play a vital role in protecting the Coastal Bend from unwanted storm surge.

Nueces County Coastal Parks Director Scott Cross said that the program hasn't seen a rate increase in 14 years.

"These are going up about $200 in some cases," said Cross.

The program requires a permit for excavation and construction along North Padre or Mustang Island that could potentially impact the sand dunes.

"That's the intent to protect our dune line because our dune lines are one of the most primary weapons of defense against storm surge," he said.

Cross said that construction is a big player when it comes to sand dune preservation. He said that not having a permit can have steep consequences.

"Disturbing dunes, and dune vegetation without a permit, we have to go  in and we actually have to enter a cease and desist letter. Stop your work activity. We have to assess what has been impacted, that has been impacted without a permit," he said.

Corpus Christi District 4 Councilman Dan Suckley said that because of the close relationship between the city and county, there are some projects that might need dune permits to move forward.

"One project on Mustang Island that we just approved on Tuesday in council was a zoning change for a large luxury RV park. You know they've had to go through some of the same permitting process," Suckley said.

Cross said that if you have any questions, assistance is just a call away.

"Before they turn a blade of dirt, call us so we can help you out," Cross said.
