County taking steps to mend dispute over Padre Balli Park deed

The dispute reportedly stemmed from the county appropriating land to give to a developer and a practice of allowing campers extended rental stays.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Nueces County Commissioners took steps this week to head off a deed restriction dispute covering Padre Balli Park.

The dispute reportedly stems from the county appropriating 15 acres to give to a developer and a practice of allowing campers too much time with rentals. Nueces County Judge Connie Scott said the commissioners court would like to fix those issues.

"What we voted on in court on Wednesday is just a cleanup of that," said Scott. "And to correct the chain of command and to bring it back to court and for us to say that wasn't the intent of the court. And for us to get it filed with the country clerk and have a record of that," she continued.

The county judge said they were served with a notice by the family that donated the 400 aces that make up Balli Park that they were in violation of terms. To avoid a lawsuit and to show their appreciation, Scott said they wanted to fix it.

"We want to continue with great relationships with that family. We want to continue with the public having the uses of that beautiful place there. It is a gemstone for all of us to use. And we just want to make sure we're above board and the county continues to act in the best interest and the direction we were given originally with that," said Scott.

The action will change operations at the park to allow campers only four consecutive nights instead of two weeks and to keep 15 acres from being deeded to a developer.
