CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — That testing, a first for the city, will determine how Ocean Drive is holding up after being built just a year ago and how long it will last.
The 7-mile stretch of Ocean Drive from Resaca Street to Ennis Joslin Road took a year to repave at a cost of almost $11 million.
Public works director Ernest de la Garza said the city wants to maintain its investment, and part of doing that is sending crews out to test how well the road has held up so far.
"What this test is, it's what we call an in-service evaluation,” said city of Corpus Christi Public Works Director Ernesto de la Garza. “We're evaluating the pavement structure as well as the anticipated traffic that we're expecting so we can better calculate: 1, the remaining life of the structure -- but in addition to that -- what maintenance needs are we going to need in the future."
De la Garza said the lifespan of Ocean Drive now is about 20 years but with the testing, they hope to prolong a signature street well beyond that time.
