CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — One person is dead after trying to run from Brooks County Sheriff’s deputies Wednesday night.
Department of Public Safety troopers said Thursday that at about 8:26 p.m. Wednesday, a deputy was chasing a 2016 Ford F250 truck that was reported stolen from the Houston area.
The driver, who was traveling without headlights on to avoid detection, crashed into a guardrail, which caused the deputy giving chase to crash into the truck, sparking a fire.
The deputy, 27-year-old Jose Lemus, and a dispatcher who was also in the car, 27-year-old Cruz Alberto Guel, were taken to a hospital in Kingsville with minor injuries.
The driver of the truck died at the scene after being trapped inside the vehicle. The person's identity has not yet been released.
Troopers currently are investigating the fatal crash, which happened on Farm-to-Market Road 716 west of County Road 426. Troopers said this is about 3 miles from US Hwy. 281.
