Memorial Stadium memories up for auction in Alice

Before the Skydome is demolished in December, Alice ISD is giving the community one last chance to keep a bit of the old stadium forever.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Pride of South Texas, the Skydome or better known as Memorial Stadium is shutting off their lights for good.

It's set to be demolished in December but before this happens, Alice ISD Superintendent Anysia Treviño said they're giving the community one last chance to keep a bit of the old stadium forever through an online auction.

"It's been in place for 77 years, so definitely the heart and soul of a lot of community members," Treviño said. "There's a lot of people that have a lot of memories here in Alice and because of that they like to keep a little of something of the past to remember all the great things that have happened but also looking forward to all that is coming."

There will be several items on sell such as signs, bleachers and more.

"We're selling the bleachers, the actual grass on the field, selling the concession stands, anything that is available," Treviño said.

Former Coyotes athletes turned coaches, Hector Gaza Jr. and Alan Canales share many memories together at Memorial Stadium.

"I had an 85-yard touchdown in that stadium and that's one of the memories I remember," Gaza Jr. said.

"I used to spend a lot of time behind the bleachers playing tackle the man with a football, you know that was part of being, wanting to be an Alice Coyote and stuff. By half-time that is what we'd be doing with friends of ours," Canales said.

The coaches said this is the last opportunity the community will get to cherish a piece of the stadium.

"Get online and try to buy what you want to buy and try have some memories of the stadium itself but I think it's a good thing for the community to be able to buy something out of that stadium," Gaza Jr. said.

"I would imagine the grass would sell. You know we've always been known as the best grass turf field in the area. So, I think a lot of people would be biding on the grass. I know I'd like to bid on it," Canales said.

Treviño said this is a bittersweet moment for the community of Alice.

"We're looking forward to the new chapter, closing the old and opening the new," she said. "And I think that's what's going to make Alice continue to flourish."

The proceeds will go towards the school. For more information on the auction, click here
