CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Dr. Shannon Girdy, owner of 100 Percent Chiropractic. Dr. Shannon, as all her patients call her, decided to specialize in chiropractic care after her first chiropractic adjustment helped her manage debilitating migraines and knee pain.
The proud graduate of Mary Carroll High School has been adjusting the community she grew up in since 2019.
"I've had severe knee issues. I had migraines towards the point where I would black out. and I just always questioned what's going on with my body and it wasn't until I got my first adjustment that my migraines completely disappeared."
"After getting chiropractic treatment for that I'm like wow I can help so many individuals with the same issues.
According to Zippia, the most common ethnicity among chiropractors is White, making up 80% of all chiropractors. Only 2.2% are Black or African American.
Dr. Shannon is from Corpus Christi and has been treating the community she grew up in since 2019, offering effective pain management for various condition with a natural approach.
"I do try to take my patients through a healthier route just through natural approaches without the intervention of medications or injections," said Dr. Girdy. "Majority come for back pain, neck pain, headaches but also individuals that suffer from constipation, menstrual cycle irregularities, thyroid issues."
Dr. Shannon treats a range of patients, from one day old infants to six foot line backers, the elderly and everything in between.
Her very first patient was skeptical about chiropractic care.
Monica James, who is also Black, said that chiropractic treatments are not widely practiced in the African American community.
"In our culture Chiropractor is not really practiced or really discussed so I was little skeptical myself but once I came in and started and got on my journey it is great."
Analysis by the National Library of Medicine states the majority of those who turn to chiropractic care are white -- 96% to 97% --while only one to 2% are black.
55% of Black adults say they have had at least one of six negative experiences with doctors or other health care providers and feel unheard and unseen when they go to the doctor making them not want to go.
James said that she believes her chiropractic treatments helped her with weight loss.
"This is where I was at 189 pounds two months after I started this was me yesterday at 142..I know," she says, admiring her transformation. "The glow, oh my goodness the glow is real."
"I got knees like Meg the Stallion now."
