Carroll High School hosts poetry event for Black History Month

Students and staff were able to recite classic pieces as well as their own original work.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Carroll High School hosted a poetry event highlighting Black perspectives.

The poetry event was part of the high school's celebration of Black History Month.

Students and staff were able to recite classic pieces and their own original work during lunch.

Darren Williams, a freshman student said that the event was a big moment that allowed for him and other students voices to be heard.

"They covered us...they covered all our history. They shadowed us and everything, so I personally think, us taking that mask off is showing our true history, our true color, what we really fight for," said Williams. "So, I personally think it's just freedom being liberated from us."

The students we spoke with said it was a good opportunity for them to express themselves and feel like others were really listening.

Our CHS Motto: "Many Faces, Many Voices, One Campus of Champions!" Today, students and staff recited both classics and original poetry during lunch for Black History Month. Wonderful performances!
