CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) — Military men and woman work even during the holidays to ensure our freedom, and one woman is coordinating a home away from home for them just in time for Christmas.
Sarah Banta is the executive director of the USO of South Texas. The organization provides support for military families by offering various services and basic home supplies. During the holidays, Banta said it is important to show them how much they are appreciated.
"The reason why we get to celebrate Christmas is because they're out there doing the work that they do," Banta said. "They are insuring our freedom."
The USO has partnered this year with Cheniere Energy and My Country 107 to provide Christmas decorations and gifts. Military members can stop by their location on base for free Christmas wrapping supplies and even get a bite at their new grab-n-go pantry.
"They can just come in and expect a fun time," Banta said. "We have pool table, foosball, a piano, TV, sofas, gaming, computers. Just stuff to make it feel like a home away from home."
Banta said she loves supporting military members and their families, and connecting their needs with community partners.
"Any time someone goes out of their way to help a military member or just show their thanks to them, it means a lot to them," Banta said.
The USO of South Texas runs largely thanks to volunteers and is funded solely by generous sponsors. Banta said she is most thankful for the donations that come from the community as all money that is raised is spent locally.
