Overnight storm causes busy day for tree trimmers, power crews across the Coastal Bend

You likely heard the rain outside of your window, but it was the wind that followed that is keeping crews working overtime Wednesday.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Many of your neighbors might still be cleaning up debris left behind from Tuesday night's storm that moved through the area.

You most likely heard the rain outside of your window but it was the wind that followed that is now keeping folks, like Josh Fraedrick with CC-TX Lawn Care, working overtime.

"A lot of downed branches all across the city, it will be real busy for the tree guys," Fraedrick said.

He was outside the KIII Studios with a chainsaw in hand, working to clean up the aftermath of a large, downed tree which was splintered right down the middle.

He's someone who knows the power of the wind.

"The wind will push anything that hasn't already been eaten by any little insects or has a general rot left over from the winter time," Fraedrick said.

A fence on Mount Vernon Street was no match for strong wind gusts, the boards were toppled over like toothpicks.

Places like Aransas Pass saw wind speeds up to 57 mph.

Orange Grove received 53 mph-winds where a big tree snapped outside the elementary.

In Annaville, crews spent the day clearing a section of Hart Road after a tree came crashing down, it was snapped at its base and also brought down a utility pole.

"The rain was pretty bad up till about 3 a.m. and then after the rain stopped the winds picked up and that's when the tree blew over," resident Mylon Edwards said.

Edwards has lived off the roadway for 18 years, and watched as crews worked to get things up and running again.

"The power company showed up to cut the power, the City showed up to clean the tree," he said.

In Calallen, the weather created quite a mess at the South Fork Apartments where bricks came tumbling down leaving the side of Building 2 exposed.

Meantime, Fraedrick said the storm should serve as a reminder to tidy up your trees for hurricane season.

"Any tree limb that is going to be a possible hazard, get it off your roof, away from windows and not hanging over your cars," he said.

While most of it can be done by yourself, Fraedrick said if it's taller than 10 feet, call in an expert.
