Padre Island National Seashore looking for recent college graduates for summer work opportunities

Those interested in the biological science technician openings are encouraged to move fast because the application deadline is this Friday.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Padre Island National Seashore is preparing for their Spring and Summer season by opening up biological science technicians and seasonal maintenance employees.

Public Information Officer for the Padre Island National Seashore, Kelly Taylor, said these jobs are particularly desirable for recent college graduates since they start in March and end in July.

"These positions are ideal for recent college grads, or people who are currently not working because they start in March and wrap up in July," Taylor said. "It could be a summer job, but not the full summer because summer jobs typically run through September."

Those interested in the biological science technician openings are encouraged to move fast because the deadline to apply is this Friday, Nov. 17.

The deadline for the seasonal maintenance openings is Jan. 1.

Taylor said the best way to apply is through usajobs.gov and encouraged applicants to not just send in a resume, but to take time to fill out the forms that come with applying for a federal job.

"Don't just upload your resume and walk away," Taylor said. "When you are applying for federal jobs, it's not just a one page resume, they are asking for a lot more information than just the application you might submit in a corporate or private lab situation."

One main task employees would be asked to do during the summer is look for nesting sea turtles.

"When the turtles are found nesting then they are going to take measurements, collect data on the turtles themselves, and collect eggs the turtles lay in the sand, and take them back to the lab so they can be hatched out," Taylor said.

With the summer South Texas heat in mind, Taylor said the field work may be exhausting, but is ultimately rewarding for those who can withstand the hot temperatures working along our beaches.

There are also more temperature controlled labs to help get your foot in the door.
