Padre Island neighborhood keeps time-honored tradition of trick-or-treating alive

There were so many trick-or-treaters, one family started keeping count with a clicker saying they got over 1,000 last year!

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — While we are seeing more and more families turn to gatherings like "trunk or treats" there are still some pockets of the city where that time-honored tradition of trick-or-treating holds true. And while those neighborhoods found on The Island can get packed with little ghouls and goblins, the traffic can also be a nightmare to navigate.

The Salty Witches put a spell on the residents of Eaglesnest and Hawsknest Bay drives as they kicked off the festivities with a different kind of street sweep.

This as hundreds of costumed creatures came out in search of sweet treats.

At one house, it wasn't the candy that was popular, but the bottled water for those breaking a sweat!

"I think it gives everybody a good place to bring their kids to keep them safe, try to keep the traffic down to a minimum and keeps everyone in one concentrated neighborhood," resident Shane Warnick said.

There are so many trick-or-treaters, one family started keeping count with a clicker.

"Last year we had 1,380," resident Will Perrin said.

While the street was packed, traffic was slow-going as drivers had to keep a close watch for kids running across the street.

Other residents chose golf carts to navigate the crowds.

"You have to really watch where you are going and be safe, try to get out here early," Danny Thompson said.

Everyone doing their part to keep neighbors safe.

Residents said the time-honored tradition of trick-or-treating is something that won't go away in this neighborhood, calling it a community effort to keep the Halloween spirit alive and well.
