Local mom, placenta percreta advocate hosts blood drive Sunday

In the condition the placenta, which provides oxygen and nutrients to the baby through the umbilical cord, grows into surrounding organs increasing blood loss risk.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Local mother Jessica Reyes dedicated her time Sunday by hosting a blood drive at the Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church.

Reyes is a mother of two and experienced a rare placenta disorder called placenta percreta during her pregnancy. The condition caused her placenta -- which provides oxygen and nutrients to the baby through the umbilical cord -- to grow into surrounding organs which put her at risk for blood loss.

Her experience prompted her to share her story and organize the blood drive with her siblings to help several woman in our community, especially mothers who may have the same life-threatening condition.

"I'm a living and true testimony here in the Coastal Bend of the importance of blood donations and not just for pregnancies, not just for placenta percreta; there's so many reasons especially right now we have hurricane season, it's the summer there's a lot more reasons why we need blood donations during this time," Reyes said.

She also mentioned that this blood drive was her birthday gift this year and told 3NEWS about 30 donors come out and dedicated their time to help fill up our blood bank in the Coastal Bend.
