Police increase patrols on Shoreline to prevent racing, reckless driving

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Corpus Christi Police Department continues to crackdown on street racing and reckless driving along the Bayfront on Friday with increased patrols.

A flyer made the rounds on social media this week promoting a planned meet up of car enthusiasts touting "burnout trophies," however, it was nowhere to be found Friday night.

What was visible on the other hand were police officers in position up and down Shoreline Boulevard, ready to make arrests.

The quiet start of the night along Shoreline didn't last long.

3NEWS drove up and down the street where our crew spotted police making several traffic stops.

At Shoreline Boulevard and Park Avenue, two motorcycles were placed on the flat bed trailers of tow trucks.

This as police continue their efforts to go after speeders, racers, and reckless drivers.

Visitors along the Bayfront took notice of the increased police activity.

"Street racing in this public area that's kind of crazy, they're doing their job stopping everybody," said Gilbert Trillo.

An uptick of viral videos that show one after another car using downtown as their own dragway have been making the rounds on social media recently.

Police say those same videos are helping in their investigations.

The barge dock across from the American Bank Center was also a ghost town Friday night.

A video recently taken there shows a passenger ejected from a car going around in circles.

Police are now actively seeking the driver, 19-year-old Jamie Nicole Cardenas.

Their message is clear, officers will not be tolerating this behavior.

"The Corpus Christi Police Department is going to target that aggressively we will be out, you will see us we will be highly visible, we will definitely address the situation," said Deputy Chief James Lerma.

Since the beginning of the year, the nighttime traffic enforcement unit has made nearly 200 racing and reckless driving arrests to include impounding of the vehicles involved.
