Port Aransas Ferry Operations adds new ferry to its fleet

All ferries are named after former TxDOT executive directors.

PORT ARANSAS, Texas — A new vessel is joining the Port Aransas Ferry Operations fleet. It was presented before area leaders Friday and given its name.

The ferry was named the "Joseph F. Weber" after the Texas Department of Transportation's former executive director.

Familiar faces like State Rep. Todd Hunter, Nueces County Judge Barbara Canales and Port Aransas Mayor Charles Bujan were present at the new ferry's unveiling.

Weber, the ferry's namesake, was also present.

"It's really about coming home, coming to a community that cares so much about its citizens, and providing services for them," Weber said. "TxDOT being a part of that and this ferry boat operation down here is so important to the community and it's been a special day to be a part of it."

The new ferry is the fifth 28-vehicle ferry in the fleet of eight. All ferries are named after former TxDOT executive directors.
