Sinton High School was at least partially without power for more than five hours on Tuesday.

SINTON, Texas — Power has been fully restored at Sinton High School as of 10 a.m., according to Sinton ISD Superintendent Andy Reddock. The school was at least partially without power for more than five hours Tuesday morning.

Sinton ISD did not cancel or delay classes Tuesday. School started at 7:55 a.m.

According to Roddock, district officials did not become aware of the outage until around 6:30 a.m. when maintenance crews were dispatched to check on the campuses and realized there was a power issue at the high school. American Electric Power Texas was called at that time, but the extent of the outage was not yet clear because the majority of the campus still had power.

Students in classrooms without power were being sent instead to the school's auditorium. However, one student commented on the 3NEWS Facebook page and called the school an "ice box" and said the auditorium was "very cold."

The AEP Texas power outage map said the outage started at 4:29 a.m. Officially, temperatures in Sinton got as low as 23 degrees overnight, according to 3NEWS meteorologist Carly Smith. By 9:45 a.m., the temperature was still only 27 degrees.

AEP Texas crews arrived at the campus at around 7:15 a.m. Power was fully restored as of 10 a.m.

There's no word what the temperature inside the school is nor how long it could take the school to warm back up now that power has been restored.

3NEWS reporter Michael Gibson said parents were showing up and pulling their kids out of school.

After a lengthy power outage amid freezing weather, parents showed up to Sinton High School to pick up their children.

AEP Texas told 3NEWS the high school outage was the only one in Sinton.

Reddock said the root cause of the power outage was a blown fuse on an exterior transformer.

"It was unfortunate that it happened of all mornings, this morning, but in all reality it's an issue that could have happened at any time during the day," Reddock said.
