CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — With much colder temperatures on the way to the Coastal Bend, when it comes to your plants, here's a couple of ways to take precaution before the front gets here.
Assistant manager for Gill Garden Center, Wyatt Page talked through the steps to cover up outdoor plants to trap ground warmth.
"First thing is, you're going to want to water your plants really well. You need a good, deep drink of water," Page said. "That's going to insulate the root system and prevent them from getting more damaged. The other thing that you are going to want to do is when you cover your plants with a freeze cloth, you're going to want to make sure you secure it all the way to the ground."
Haven't taken down your Christmas lights yet? No problem! Owner of Planted CCTX, Tina Turman said this is a good thing for your plants!
"Adding Christmas lights in there to keep the warmth," Turman said.
But in the event your plants don't fair the best...
"If your plant does get damaged by the freezes, is not to chop it back yet," Turman said. "If it freezes again, it's just going to damage all that new growth again. So, it may be unsightly, and it may not look the greatest but keep it on there till the beginning of March at least. Until we know we don't have any more freezes."
Both Turman and Page said these are little things you can do now to help yourself later. But most of all they said to not get discouraged:
"Not everything is all doomed," Page said. "It's really just going to be your tropical plants and some of like your tender perennials that will get a little bit of damage."
