CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Longtime educator and band director, Ram Chavez, was honored at a local high school today.
Veterans Memorial High School dedicated the performing arts hall to Chavez, who is the founder of the Corpus Christi Veterans Band.
Chavez was in education for 25 years teaching countless students at nearly every school in the district and has fought for better facilities for the kids.
He said having the state-of-the-art hall named after him is a touching tribute.
"Teachers have a saying, 'If I can reach one student, I've accomplished something,'" Chavez said. "What I feel is I think I've accomplished more than one student. Because I mean they're here. It's awesome. It's awesome where they have come from."
He credits his belief in the students and their potential, which is proven by how many have gone on to become accomplished composers, performers and band directors.
