CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Anyone who has visited the seawall downtown during the summer knows it means dealing with no shade and long walks to any nearby restaurants and shops. Soon that may change as the Marina’s new master plan includes restaurants and shops to be built on the actual seawall.
This master plan is in the process of being completed and will presented to city council next month.
"Included in that would be future development sites on each of the T-heads for restaurant development, retail development," Marina Director Jonathan Atwood said.
The city is looking to put businesses on top of the seawall just like the miradors seen up and down the structure.
"The idea is to maybe carve out sections similar to the Selena Mirador and put an opportunity for future development there," Atwood said.
Council will have to sign off on the idea and so far at least one council member is on board with the plan.
"My thing is we always got to have a big vision so we can have that big vision then we can look at what we want Corpus Christi to be, so I’m excited about where we’re going to go," Councilman Roland Barrera said. "It’s just once again we have got to figure out what are we going to do to fund it and how we can get from Step A all the way to Z."
Visitors will soon be able to walk down the brand new $6 million Peoples Street T-head boardwalk. Council approved hiring a Gregory company to completely tear out the 30-year-old wooden structure and put in a brand new concrete boardwalk with composite decking like what you see at the Cole Park Pier.
The Marina director believes work on the boardwalk should start this fall and could take up to a year to complete.
