Salvation Army of Kingsville to open new food pantry

The food pantry and extended soup kitchen will help the Kingsville branch of the Salvation Army feed more people in need, more often.

KINGSVILLE, Texas —

The Salvation Army of Kingsville will soon have its very own food pantry and expanded soup kitchen.

Following an inspection from the Coastal Bend Food Bank, a building at King's Way Family Church will soon be filled with food to feed those in need.

Salvation Army board member and teacher at King's Way Leadership Academy Cassandra Rojas says this new pantry will help the community in big ways.

"Everybody knows prices in food, and everything has gone up," said Rojas. "It's become really hard for those families that were in the middle and were OK are now not OK and need that help. Now those families that were that were barely making it, are now not making it at all."

Every Wednesday, King's Way brings in 80 to 100 kids to their gym and provides them with a warm meal and soon they'll be able to feed even more.

"Even though they know they're going to eat, like on Wednesday's that we do already, they already know they know, but they still ask, "Are we going to eat?!" Just seeing the gratification, the satisfaction of them being fed and eating a warm meal is what we look most forward to," Salvation Army Board member Jolinda Calderon said.

Lead pastor at King's Way, Edwin Cann says once the food pantry is ready, he's excited to see just how many more people his church and salvation army will be able to serve.

"Even as small as Kingsville is, there's a lot of hurting people. With us being able to feed them, and the food bank and all these things and then going through going through Salvation Army, it gives us a greater agenda to move out into other areas," he said.
