Saving old Nueces County Courthouse comes with a price

There are seven federal and state financial incentives to support the project.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Texas Historical Commission gave Nueces County Commissioners the financial numbers to restore the historic 1914 Nueces County Courthouse.

Courthouse Program Director Sharon Fleming told the Commissioners that the old courthouse is not only a famous landmark but could be turned into a successful high-end boutique hotel. It would all come at a high cost.

"We're not going to sugar coating the costs here we're estimating approximately 68 million dollar project," Fleming said.

There are seven federal and state financial incentives to support the project.

County Judge Barbara Canales told commissioners that the incentives program would be covering about 50 percent of the costs of the courthouse makeover.

Currently, the next step is to use grant dollars to hire an engineer with a historical preservation background that would do another structural study of the courthouse.
