BRAZORIA COUNTY, Texas — A Columbia-Brazoria ISD school bus was involved in a crash with a dump truck in Brazoria County Thursday morning, according to the Texas Department of Transportation.
It happened just before 7 a.m. on State Highway 36. The roadway was closed in both directions from FM 522 to County Road 354.
The State Troopers from the Texas Department of Public Safety were at the scene. TxDOT crews were also there to assist. Life Flight was also called.
Texas DPS Sgt. Woodard told KHOU 11 that after reviewing the video from the bus, it's been determined the driver disregarded a stop sign held by a flagger.
A student and the bus driver were taken to the hospital out of caution, DPS said. There were 34 high school students on board at the time of the crash.
Editor's note: The district originally reported 21 students were on the bus. They later said there were 34.
Columbia-Brazoria ISD in a brief statement said the bus driver and one student were evaluated and flown to an area hospital. Read the district's full statement:
"This morning, a CBISD secondary route school bus collided with a dump truck at CR 353 and Highway 36. Twenty-one high school students and one driver were on the bus at the time of the accident. The driver and one student were evaluated and are being life flighted.
"All other students were evaluated and have been released to their parents or are on their way to school at this time."
CBISD also later released dashcam video showing the crash.
