Corpus Christi (Kiii News) — Are you looking for something fun to do with your kids during the school break? Want to learn more about the birds that live in your yard? Join the Oso Bay Wetlands Preserve for their Backyard Birding craft day in preparation for February’s Backyard Bird Count! Preserve Manager Sara Jose joined us on First Edition to talk about this program.
The Oso Preserve will be hosting a series of programs over the next few weeks to give families a chance to get away from the holiday hustle and spend some time outdoors. A porch talk will take place on December 27, and a nature walk on December 29 as well as a bird craft time on January 5.
Birds that visit the Coastal Bend in winter such as Sandhill cranes and ducks will be highlighted during the porch talk and nature walk. These are birds that have flown south to enjoy the beach for the winter instead of the snow. Craft time will be held on Saturday January 5 and will focus on the birds that can commonly be found in local yards.
The Great Backyard Bird Count is a national census of birds across the country done by people watching bird feeders and checking out their yards. Experts are hoping more Coastal Bend families can participate by adding their data and information to the count, so that scientists can get more accurate numbers of our current bird populations.
Families can follow the Oso Bay Wetlands Preserve & Learning Center on Facebook and Instagram, or they can visit their website at www.osopreserve.com
As always, we would like to thank the University of Texas Marine Science Institute and the Coastal Bend Audubon Society for putting this segment together each month.
