State Rep. Todd Hunter ready to battle 2020 TWIA rate increases

TWIA has more than enough funding on hand in the event that another hurricane pays Texas a visit.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — State Rep. Todd Hunter spoke to a group in Ingleside, Texas, Tuesday about the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association.

Hunter reminded property owners that even though they fought and won a skirmish in the most recent Texas legislative session to keep rates steady, the war is not over.

The TWIA board voted to increase rates by 10-percent last August following Hurricane Harvey, but Hunter led the fight to keep it from happening. Ultimately, TWIA withdrew the rate increase request for the year 2019, but Hunter said the next battle is to stop rate increases for 2020.

"Right now we are in a situation where we are still rebuilding from Hurricane Harvey and we don't need any more punishment," Hunter said. "We need this growth to occur. Make sure we get back, and that's going to be the plan right now."

Hunter said TWIA has more than enough funding on hand in the event that another hurricane pays Texas a visit.
