CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Students at Gregory-Portland High School held a walkout protest Wednesday to show their disagreement with the district's apparent firing of one of its most beloved teachers, Jonathan Turner.
The school's programming and design and robotics teacher had been with the district for nearly a decade and was even awarded "Teacher of the Year" during the 2021-2022 school year.
He was fired by the district due to a disciplinary action he took against a student.
Now, dozens of his students have taken action to try and save his job. In a statement to 3NEWS, student organizers say the peaceful protest is the only way the district will hear their voice and that it is a voice that "should be heard."
"The kids that had him love him so much and now he's missing," one student, Riley Brahm said. "We do not deserve this! Keep Turner!"
In response the district said in a separate statement to 3NEWS:
"Thank you for reaching out to us. School district personnel matters are protected by law, and in keeping with law the situation related to your inquiry is confidential. While we cannot divulge or discuss any information, we are following standard local policy and Texas state law in this matter and in accord with standard practice. Thank you for your understanding and support."
