Students learn to be nicotine-free at 'Kick the Butts' event

16 different school districts attended Tuesday's event.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Middle schoolers gathered Thursday to learn about the dangers of nicotine use while enjoying an IceRays game at the American Bank Center.

The "Kick the Butts" event was organized by the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center to promote good health to middle school students and teach them about the dangers of tobacco and nicotine use.

"We learn more and more about vaping products not being completely harmless, and they could also be a gateway to starting cigarettes for example, so that's what we are trying to convey, the message of addiction," professor Alex Prokhorov said.

Students learned about ASPIRE, A Smoking Prevention Interactive Experience, which is a bilingual program about staying on the good path by being tobacco- and nicotine-free.

16 different school districts attended Tuesday's event.
