CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The City of Corpus Christi has the results of a study they started in September of 2018 that looked into how to streamline the building permit process.
The study was conducted by a consultant and given to the Development Services Department. It showed people feel they need to jump through hoops to get a building permit.
The consultant who conducted the survey said people feel they have a challenge because the City code has vague language and builders have to address multiple people to get a short anwser. Those who were surveyed said the City code needs to be reorganized.
Gene DeLauro, Assistant Director for the City's Development Services Department, acknowledged all those concerns. According to DeLauro, the common denominator that most people get frustrated with is the amount of time the whole process takes.
"There could be items that have to go to the planning commission for approval, may have to go to the city council for approval, and those things take time to go through the system," DeLauro said. "The projects that don't require those items can go through a lot quicker."
DeLauro hopes to make changes by hiring another consultant to come in and take a thorough look at how to make the building permit process a more seamless one.
According to DeLauro, the process should take no longer than two years, and then the recommended changes will be brought to city council for consideration.
