CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Corpus Christi Athletic Club owner Sam Susser was in Corpus Christi on Friday for the groundbreaking of the club's new pickleball court expansion.
While attending the event, Susser, touched on several other topics, including Israel's conflict with Hamas.
Susser is Jewish.
"The war in the Middle East is very personal to us," he said. "We have family and loved ones that live in Israel. . . . and Jewish people all over the world count on Israel as that place of refuge . . . that we should have had and wish we had during the Holocaust when 6 million Jews were killed."
Susser and his family also are known as the former owners of the Stripes convenience-store chain.
Squashing a longtime rumor Friday, he said the family didn't want to let its stake in Stripes go, but were instead bought out.
That's when they turned their attention to the athletic club, which they've owned for about 7 years.
